High School Is Hard, University Is Harder

Can I get through my first day of college well?

Entering university is a scary thing. Imagine, you have long prepared for your first day and when the time comes, everything seems wrong for you. You don’t want that, neither do I. So? There are several things you and I need to know before entering university:

1. School Academic Expectation vs University Academic Expectation

In high school, academic expectations are not always high, and good grades can often be obtained with minimum effort. This is especially true for bright students who discover that they don’t have to do much more than attending classes and remember what their teacher says to earn high grades. In college, academic expectations are much higher, and minimum effort usually produces poor grades. So, you have to be more responsible and put in a lot of effort, but don't ever forget to take a rest!

2. Self-concept

Problems and failures will never stop coming to us. It will always come and the only thing we can do is to be ready and overcome them. Self-concept plays when those things come. Self-concept is the image that we have of ourselves. For example, beliefs such as "I can overcome this" or "I am a kind person" are part of an overall self-concept. When you are facing your problem, you have to be proactive to handle it. You have to be sure that you can face all the obstacles that will come to you. The point is, you don't have to be afraid to fail. Even if you fail or have a problem, you have to try to get better, over and over again.

3. Prioritize and plan

There are a lot of opportunities like volunteering, organizations, internships, committee, and many more in university. But before you decide to take one of those opportunities, you have to know your goal, your mission, what do you want to pursue after finishing college? So, by knowing that, you take those opportunities by things that relate to your goal and mission. Planning is a must to know the order of your priorities.

4. Time-Management

After knowing your priorities, you have to manage your time to do things you have prioritized. Time management is the key to survive your days in college. By managing your time, you can balance your inside and outside activities in college. Try to not waste your time, but it’s easy to get distracted by things around you. How to not get distracted is to set your goals or to-do list each day. Academic advisor Colin Deyman, who advises undergraduate STEM students at Southern New Hampshire University said, “How well a student manages his or her time will also affect overall well-being—at the end of the week or the end of the term.”. If you manage your time well, your energy will distribute well in everything you do.

I know that those things are easier said than done. But, remember self-concept! Believe in yourself, you can do all things that you set out to do.

I can do all this through Him who gives me strength - Philippians 4:13 -
