Kēpōers, have you realized that one of the most precious things in life is time? It’s the most precious resource since you can’t get it back. According to Jonathan Edwards, time is precious because it is very short and we do not know how much time we have left. But the thing is, many people haven’t realized how important time is. We sometimes don’t know how to manage it correctly. Be honest, the one time we planned to be productive, we probably do something else or even worse, we procrastinate and end up doing nothing.
But, don’t worry, because Kēpō is here to help! This time, we are going to give you, Kēpōers, a few tips on how to manage your time correctly.
Before we learn to manage our time, we first have to know what it is. So, what is time management? According to www.mindtools.com, “Time management” is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Effective time management allows individuals to assign specific time slots to activities as per their importance. So, time Management refers to making the best use of time as time is always limited.
Firstly, ask yourself which activity is more important and how much time should be allocated to each of them? You should know which work should be done earlier and which can be done a little later. If you are still confused, maybe you can write your task in the following format. This following format is called the Eisenhower’s Time Management Matrix popularized by Stephen R. Covey in his book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. This matrix will help you arrange your time.
Still confused? Well it’s okay, because not all people can use the same method, so here are other tips you can follow to manage your time;
1. Set a goal for yourself
Think about what you want to achieve in your life. Turn in assignments on time? Not be late for a meeting? Take a pen and paper and write down where you want to be seen five years or a year from now. By setting an objective for yourself, it gives you a sense of direction on what you should do next. We also suggest Kēpōers to keep a journal. That way, you can learn more about yourself and use it to improve yourself. If you don't know what you should write, you can search for journal prompts to start with.
2. Create a time audit
When it comes to time management, the first thing you need to consider is where your time actually goes. Is it worth your time? You may believe that you only need 10 minutes on shower, but in reality it can take an hour or more.
The easiest way to keep track of your time is to download an app like RescueTime, Toggl or the app Calendar from your phone to track everything you do for a week. You can then access a report to find out what’s stealing most of your time.
3. Set a time limit for each task
Setting a time limit to each task can prevent people from getting distracted or procrastinating. That way, you feel that you are being challenged by time and set out a competition, making you more motivated. If you don’t finish your work on the time you set, you can still work on it without taking up other scheduled times.
4. Use a to-do list
“All goals and projects are made up of smaller parts that need to be accomplished in order to achieve the goal, or complete the project. Create to-do lists for each goal and project, listing all the measurable steps that need to be accomplished,” suggests William Lipovsky. By using a to-do list you can list the thing you need to complete and tick the one you have completed. There are also some apps that could help you like todoist, remember the milk, evernote, any.do and much more.
5. Spend your morning on MITs
You should do your biggest and most-challenging task in the morning first. There are a couple reasons why this is such an effective time management trick. For starters, you usually have the most amount of energy in the AM. So it’s better to tackle these tasks when you’re not drained. You can use that feeling of accomplishment to get through the rest of the day. Also, starting your day with your most important task gives you certainty that you can get it done without being distracted by other things or people. The morning time is seemingly always yours, and if it's not then you can adjust it by waking up earlier to make this time yours.
6. Change your schedule
If you’re reading this article then it’s obvious that you want to discover some useful time management tips. But, if you’re still struggling with time management, the solution may be as simple as changing your schedule around.
7. Take a break between
When doing a lot of tasks without a break, it is harder to stay focused and motivated. Allow some downtime between tasks to clear your head and refresh yourself. Consider grabbing a brief nap, going for a short walk, or meditating. Use the pomodoro technique so you can keep track of your time.
8. Stay Focused
Last but not least is to stay focused when you are doing your thing, so your time will not be wasted. How to stay focused? Read the next article about “How to Stay Focus” to know more about this.
Ephesians 5:15-17 So, then, be careful how you live. Do not be unwise but wise, making the best use of your time because the times are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
