Hi, Kepoers! Do you guys know that fashion has a really long history? First of all, fashion is a form of self-expression and autonomy at a particular period and place and in a specific context, of clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, and body posture. Fashion trends always change every time that something is hip or popular at a certain point in time. Usually, fashion trends are set by celebrities or someone that is influential in society. Everyone wants to copy the fashion of celebrities to become trendy. Now, we are going to see the fashion trends back then. Let’s get on and start our time machine!
1900s
In the 1900s, American women wore tailored blouses and skirts. Corsets were worn underneath the blouses and skirts. The "S-bend" or "health" corset is a style that changed the wearer's posture. Actually, this corset is very harmful to health because it presses the stomach very tight to make the stomach seems flat. Toward the end of the decade, the fashion shifted to girdles. More comfortable clothes were also introduced, with options like blazers, long skirts, and wool sweaters becoming part of many women's wardrobes even until now.
1950-60s
At the beginning of the 1960s, women wore tailored skirts, high-heeled shoes, and dresses known as shifts. The most controversial trend is the miniskirt. The miniskirt we wear today actually was born out of a youth culture movement that strived to shift from the repressed post-war 50s fashion. Miniskirt had slowly begun to creep into the fashion via 1950s sci-fi movies such as Flight to Mars and Forbidden Planet. But the peak of time that makes the miniskirt a fashion trend is in the 60s when the miniskirt became the cultural icon we recognize today. It represented a political youth movement where teens no longer wanted to dress like their parents. The miniskirt was a rebellious garment, representing the shift in societal dynamics. Miniskirt can be matched with any kind of top, like blouses, turtlenecks, or even just T-shirts.
Audrey HepburN
Trendsetter from The 1950s
Does any of you doesn’t know who Audrey Hepburn is? She is an iconic actor that has been very famous from the 1950s and even until now. Audrey Hepburn was born with the name Audrey Kathleen Ruston on May 4, 1929, in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium. She went to a ballet school in London on a scholarship and later began a modeling career. As a model, she seemed like had found her calling in life. In 1948, after being spotted modeling by a producer, she was signed to a bit part in the European film Dutch in Seven Lessons (1948). Later, she had a speaking role in another movie, but the part still wasn't much. Then, Audrey gained an immediate reputation in the US with her role in Roman Holiday (1953). This film turned out to be a big success, and she won an Oscar as Best Actress. She had made a total of 31 high-quality movies. Her elegance and style will always be remembered in film history as evidenced by her being named in Empire magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time".
The first visual many people will have when thinking about Audrey Hepburn is her iconic outfit in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. She wore a body-skimming, sleeveless black dress worn with white opera gloves and accessorized with a big hat, sunglasses, and a long cigarette holder. These days, cigarette holder is not used anymore, but the rest of the look is timeless and stunning.
Inspired by Coco Chanel, the concept of the “little black dress” emerged in the 1920s. Hubert de Givenchy based his design on this timeless piece of absolute elegance and fabricated a sheath dress with minimalist cuts on the back for Breakfast at Tiffany’s and its lifelong muse. Audrey Hepburn showed women how it could never be out of fashion. O
ne of the actresses who pulled this fashion trend very well is IU. She played the role of Jang Man Wol in Hotel Del Luna, a serial Korean drama. Of all her looks in the drama, this is the most memorable one. She can definitely carry any look or style she wears.
Another iconic fashion trend that Audrey Hepburn made is the boatneck cut. The designer Givenchy developed Audrey Hepburn's costumes for Sabrina. With her help, he designed the famous boatneck dress she wore so beautifully. For women who want to show off their collarbones, it's a very stunning style.
1970s
Jeans got wider, heels get higher, and synthetic fabrics are the main point of the 1970s fashion style. Fashion styles that were popular in the 1970s are bell-bottom pants, frayed jeans, midi skirts, maxi dresses, tie-dye, peasant blouses, and ponchos. Also, don’t forget about the accessories like chokers, headbands, scarves, and jewelry made of wood, stones, feathers, and beads. Men also wear bell-bottom pants, which were usually worn with satin shirts. By the end of the decade, fashion was heavily impacted by the trend of disco fashion style, especially for men. Disco styles for women are jersey wrap dresses, tube tops, sequined shirts, spandex shorts, and high slit skirts with boots or chunky heels. Platform heels which is a fashion trend these days actually were also a trend from the 1970s.
2000s
Many clothing trends in the 2000s were born out of globalization, the rise of fast fashion. Affordable fast fashion brands such as Zara, H&M, and Forever 21 shaped this decade. Popular outfits for women were mesh or handkerchief tops, box-pleated or leather skirts, shiny pants, and sparkly shoes. Casual clothing and leisurewear were the big trends of the early 2000s. Denim became an iconic fashion item that is for men and women. Denim is not only jeans but also jackets and hats. If you want to match a casual style for women, you can try crop tops, hoodies, low-rise flared jeans, cargo pants, daisy dukes, jean skirts, off-the-shoulder tops, ribbed sweaters, with platform sandals, Ugg boots, or sneakers. Common looks for men were distressed denim, cargo pants, tracksuits, rugby or polo shirts, flip flops, oxford shoes, and sneakers. As the decade went on, 2000s fashion began to bring back the trend from 1960s bohemian looks. Yoga pants, low-rise jeans, cowl-neck shirts, peasant tops, capri pants, cropped jackets, and dresses over jeans were popular outfit styles for women.
2010s
When it comes to fashion trends that shaped the 2010s, dad jeans, sneakers, and logo-laden everything strike multiple chords. Streetwear also became one of fashion's biggest markets. In the 2010s the fashion trends changed many times. There are so many things that are a trend in the 2010s. Let’s talk about some of it!
Bomber jacket, it’s so easy to style, you can just match it with a white T-shirt and jeans. There are many kinds of jeans that are on-trend in the 2010s, like mom jeans and skinny jeans. You can wear mom jeans for baggier style jeans that had a vintage vibe to them. Another controversial sneaker trend is the wedge sneaker. It takes from the athleisure trend from the 2000s. A crop top is a must for your outfit choices, especially because it works for every occasion. Pair with joggers and you’re ready to go for a run or match it with legging or jeans and you’re ready to hang out with your friends.
Now, let’s get back to 2022. So, what do you think? Which trend or decades do you think have the best fashion trends? These days, there are so many trends that were brought back from “old” trends or even still a trend, like platform shoes, crop tops, scrunchies, and so on. Following the trend makes you look cool, but don’t just follow the trend, because fashion trends change every time. Make your own fashion style asides from following the fashion trend!
